Green Cloud Computing (GCC) has become a significant area of research for mitigating the environmental effects related to current rapid growth in cloud computing and data centers. The evolution and importance of GCC, distinguishing between users and providers of cloud-based energy resources towards encouraging a world-wide ecosystem that fosters this area. It presses upon the concern for urgency behind cloud infrastructures with energy efficiency, underlining that each allocation of resources is associated with power consumption. This adaptive task allocation algorithm conceived for optimizing energy usage within heterogeneous cloud environments presents a review on some of the latest advances such as task scheduling algorithms, virtualization technologies, and cooling systems. Furthermore, this paper addresses the issues related to the users of the clouds as well as the service providers toward the accomplishment of sustainability goals, the environmental impacts of very high energy consumption, and the various strategies in reducing carbon emissions. The obtained results further accentuate the direction to move toward green technologies for the enhancement of sustainability in cloud computing and further illustrative paths for further research that will integrate environmental concerns more fully with cloud services.
